THe 20s were a time of grandeur and wealth. What is classier and more expensive than horse racing? Owning racehorses was a symbol of high status. Going to the track was a special outing. It was the age of amazing horses, such as Man O War, one of the most well known horses ever.
- Ive always enjoyed the idea of horse racing. The gentility, the upper crustiness, etc etc. And I genuinely want to start following the sport, but I have no idea where to start. Anyone care to help me?

Start by learning to read the data published on horses… get the daily racing forum and learn to understand all the data published there.
There are many websites that will do this.

Watch races. watch a LOT of races. when you see a horse you think is interesting..look up the pedigree..look up the past performance of the sire and dam. Begin to understand the family lines and the performance of the foals.
join equibase.com… lots of information there to help you learn.
Then..follow the races of particular trainers and jockeys. Jockeys have a HUGE impact on the performance of a horse.
You can learn the lingo, the data, and then use your own intelligence to understand what the data means. About that time, you could follow one of the guys that publish their “picks”…just to see that they dont know anything better than you. You will find that the people who really know horse racing watch a LOT of races and have the ability to remember the horses that are note worthy.
Just because a horse didnt finish in the top of a race doesnt mean the horses didnt do a note worthy performance. For example..a horse that stumbles coming out of the gate, falls 14 lengths behind by the 1/2 mile and then roars back to finish 4th…closing a total of 13 lengths…is a great performance!! watch the horse the next race!
I could go on and on. Most people involved with horse racing can talk about it all day long.
