Book Description:
Beyond Integration describes the challenges a former multiple faces after “The Family Inside” – the inner personalities created during childhood to cope in a violently abusive world – integrates. This is the first book to deal with therapy beyond integration. It is also unique in its presentation, alternating between the voices of the therapist, Doris Bryant, and the former multiple/former client, Judy Kessler. In this way, two perspectives on the different phases of therapy following integration are given. The book begins with Kessler’s childhood story and proceeds through the process of integration, the three stages of post-integration, the recovery of lost developmental stages, and the development of new patterns of coping with ongoing issues. Kessler’s personal experiences are interwoven with Bryant’s responses, observations, and comments. Their insights are extremely valuable and often enlightening. Although this is the story of a single individual’s triumph over multiple personality disorder, its elements apply to all multiples and their therapists, who will benefit from both the work that Kessler has done to reclaim her shattered self and her willingness to share the realities of a life irrevocably altered by abuse.
Becoming One: A Story of Triumph over Multiple Personality Disorder
Book Description:
In Becoming One, Sarah Olson has allowed us the rare privilege of entering her internal world in her first-person account of her journey from fragmentation to wholeness. Two little girls, the author and her sister, were routinely terrorized and assaulted over a period of years by a family friend. One grew up closed and withdrawn, the other angry and self-destructive. And, most painful of all, their common suffering resulted in estrangement from each other. Becoming One began as Olson’s attempt to provide a written account of her memories for her sister as a means of reconciliation and healing. The author’s courage and generosity in candidly sharing her remarkable experiences provide important insights into the world of dissociation. Here is at once a highly personal look into an individual life, the dynamics of a troubled family, and the healing power of the therapeutic process.
Book Description:
Here at last is the real-life testimony of a woman who has lived a life shattered into 37 pieces and now is one whole person. It is an uplifting, down-to-earth story of the process of her integration and how life feels different now than it did when alternate personalities could take over. Author Phoenix Hocking recounts how her integration happened, how she felt, what she has gained, and perhaps most surprisingly, how little she has lost during the process.
Body Scripture: A Therapist’s Journal of Recovery from Multiple Personality
Book Description:
Body Scripture by clinical social worker, Barbara Hope, is a well-written, engrossing tale of a therapist’s complex journey through her own recovery from childhood trauma. Since reading this compelling story of human courage and frailty, I have recommended it widely to friends and colleagues. The book will appeal to a broad audience: individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, therapists who work with trauma survivors, and those of us who care about friends and family members who live with the memories of childhood abuse.
